1206 "Dream House"

Lubasha Visnjic: More Spoilers for Episode 12.6 - Dream House Pratt is tending to a well-dressed man named Hamamoto. Hamamoto’s big bodyguard is also there. Pratt tells Hamamoto that he’s going to get someone from Toxicology. Hamamoto says, “Doctor good”. Pratt says that doctor good, fugu bad. Haleh steps up and tells Pratt that there’s a kid in triage asking for him. Pratt says, “Take a number”. Haleh says the kid’s insistent and that he says he knows Pratt. Pratt looks over and sees Chaz, his half-brother. Pratt’s happy but surprised to see Chaz. He nods to Chaz, and Chaz waves to him. Pratt tells Haleh to put Chaz in one of the curtain areas. Haleh, wondering who Chaz is, just says OK. Pratt moves to treat another patient; Haleh almost bumps into Eve. Eve asks Haleh to walk with her. Haleh wonders why there’s so much walking. Eve asks Haleh if she remembers the chat they had. Pages later, Clemente is giving his opinion on Neela or Abby’s treatment decision for a patient. Eve gets on the intercom and politely tells Clemente that she, Ray, and Haleh are in a trauma room with someone named Jessie (15 years old; he has multiple fractures from a fall). She asks if it’s possible from him to “get [his] ass” in there. Clemente tells Neela and Abby to move fast – if the chimp gets septic, he could “crump” at any time. Neela and Abby think about that warning just as Clemente goes into Jessie’s room. In Jessie’s room, Ray and Haleh are treating the kid. Jessie’s girlfriend Polly is filming with her digicam while her friend Mako looks on. Eve thanks Clemente for joining them, then calls Polly “Spielberg” and tells her that she’s not allowed to film anything. Clemente asks Jessie how he hurt himself. Jessie says he was free-running. Mako adds that he was quite close to clearing a rail. Polly says that they should see her footage of that. Clemente doesn’t know what free-running is, so Jessie explains that it’s like pushing the envelope. They climb, jump, scale, etc. Haleh wants to know why, and Mako explains that it’s about taking risks and “re-purposing the urban environment”. Ray tells Jessie that they’re going to sedate him so that they can pop his ankle back into place. Jessie tells them to do it; he’s unkillable. Clemente tells Jessie to slow down – he just got there. Just as Haleh pushes the meds and everyone preps to do the procedure, “Robo-Dubenko” chimes in that they should think about getting an abdominal CT. Clemente doesn’t understand. Dubenko says that Jessie fell and has a distracting injury. Ray argues that the fall was less than 10 feet and his vitals are good. Clemente tells Dubenko that they’ll follow Jessie clinically. He doesn’t know Dubenko’s name, so Dubenko introduces himself as “Lucien” Dubenko. Seems Dubenko doesn’t know Clemente either and they exchange “nice-to-meet-you”s. They manage to pop the ankle back into place, and Polly asks if they can do it again – she thinks she missed it. During the procedure, Clemente’s been trying to figure out what the robot thing’s all about. Clemente asks Dubenko if he’s a real or virtual doctor. Frank pops in to tell them that if someone doesn’t clear the “screaming retard” from one of the curtain areas, he’s going to quit. Ray sarcastically tells him to give them a little incentive to do it. Frank wants to know where Laverne and Shirley are, and Haleh tells him that Abby and Neela are in the Suture Room. 2 pages later, Morris is asking someone, “…what diabolical spell have you cast on this child?”

Lubasha Visnjic: Cut to Pratt with Inez. She asks him if he can sign off on a chart. He wants to know who the patient is, and Inez tells him it’s the chart for the kid (Chaz) who got into a fight with his father. Pratt doesn’t understand what’s going on. Inez tells him that Social Services is with Chaz right now. Pratt tells Inez that she shouldn’t have done a chart. She replies that she has to do one. Pratt tells her that it isn’t like that. Inez says that Eve’s pretty strict about stuff like that. If there’s suspicion of abuse, she has to call Social Services. Pratt, who’s angry, just leaves without Inez. While they were having this conversation, they pass Sam, who’s treating a drunken woman named Sally. Sally insists on getting up, saying that “this is retarded”. Sam tells Sally to go easy and not piss everyone off. After Pratt leaves Inez, Inez looks at Sam and throws her hands up. Sam wants to know what’s wrong, and Inez tells her that she did what she was supposed to do. In the background, Sally says that this person’s retarded, that person’s retarded, and so is Sam (or Inez -- not clear which one, if it’s even them she’s talking to). Cut to Pratt going to Chaz’s room. The social worker, Liz Dade, is there. Chaz tells her that he doesn’t need any help. She says that that isn’t how it looks. Chaz sees Pratt and asks him why he has to go through everything with Dade. Pratt introduces himself and asks to speak to Dade outside. She says she’ll step outside when she’s done. Pratt starts to explain, but she cuts him off and tells him that she’s not done yet. Pratt thinks she should be. She looks at him, so he smiles and says that the nurse may have been a bit premature. He knows Chaz’s family and he comes from a stable home. Chaz and his Dad had an innocent argument and Chaz just got a little too angry. A note says that Chaz is let down that Pratt’s association is so impersonal. Dade asks Chaz if what Pratt’s saying is true. He says it is. She asks if he and/or his Dad hit each other. Chaz says that he got really mad on a chair. Dade says that that isn’t going to do it. Pratt thinks that the best thing to do is to let Chaz go home and Dade can do a follow-up in the morning. She apologizes and says she has to put the case through. Pratt admits that he’s Chaz’s brother. She wonders why he didn’t share this info with her before, and says that she’ll do a follow-up phone call in the morning. As Dade leaves, Chaz thanks Pratt. A note says that Pratt’s conflicted; Chaz is a good kid but why does he have to be in such a fucked-up position? Lily enters the room and tells him that they have multiple traumas coming in from a construction site – they’ll be there in 8 minutes. Then she leaves. Pratt gives Chaz some instructions, then tells him it was good to see him again. Cut to Sam, who’s with Inez. Inez has just told Sam what happened. Sam says that Inez didn’t do anything wrong. However, she should check with the doctor next time. It’s better to get everyone in agreement first. Inez explains that she was afraid Eve would be all over her if she didn’t call Social Services. A note says that Eve, unnoticed, pulls up to the side of the desk. She hears Sam say that Pratt had a different angle. If the kid (Chaz) is a good kid, comes from a good home, and the story fits the injury, there’s no need to call Social Services. Inez understands. At this point, Sally screams, “Tom Cruise? Retarded! Sammy Sosa? Retarded!” Sam says Sally’s name. For her troubles, Sally pulls her catheter and sprays her urine across Sam’s chest. Sam says “Sonuvabitch”.

Lubasha Visnjic: Pages later, Clemente says that he doesn’t know if he’s touched or nauseous; he’s finding it hard to tell the difference. However, the ape has to go – a giraffe is clogging up triage. A note says that he goes, and “they” are a bit disappointed. Cut to Ray joining up with Pratt in the ambulance bay. Polly passes by in the background with her camera pointing up. She says, “Okay! Ready!” We see Mako on the fire escape. He/she flips over a rail, lands on the roof of an ambulance, then goes down into the bay and runs out. Polly’s trailing behind, filming the whole thing. Pratt asks, “What the hell’s that?” Ray says, “Never mind”. Morris joins the two and asks them if they’ve seen the VIP baby that “the girls” are working on. They haven’t. Morris says that is a case for the textbooks – simian hypo-displasia. Ray says he’s never heard of it before. Morris says that it’s a rare genetic disorder. Abby knows all about it. It makes the baby look like a monkey. A paramedic unloads a 12-year-old patient named Barry, who was crushed under scaffolding at a construction site. Pratt asks for Barry’s name, and Barry raspily asks if his father’s OK. The paramedic says that Barry has a chest injury and some respiratory distress. Morris asks about Barry’s father, and the paramedic tells him that the father had an MI while trying to dig Barry out. A second rig pulls in, and Pratt assigns Ray to take the next case. Barry’s father, Paul, is in that rig. The paramedic explains that Paul is in cardiac arrest and has been down for 12 minutes. Time cut to Morris, Inez, and Pratt working on Barry. Morris is being cute with Barry, trying to put the kid at ease. After a little while, Pratt says he’ll be back. He goes into Paul’s room, where Ray, Haleh, and Lily are working. After shocking Paul, they manage to get a rhythm back. They hope Paul has some neurological function left. Clemente enters, coffee cup in hand, asking if anyone has any Splenda. No one answers. Pratt’s rubbing his knuckle on Paul’s sternum, and Ray asks if he’s getting a response. He isn’t. Clemente notes that the GSC is only 3. If they save the heart but lose the brain, they may as well stay home. Inez steps in and tells Pratt that Barry has worsening respiratory distress. Pratt says he’ll be right there. I guess Inez left the door open enough for Barry to see his father, and he raspily yells out for him. Clemente gives out treatment instructions as Pratt re-enters Barry’s room. We see Barry struggling to breathe. Morris wants to intubate. Pratt tells him to hold on. Pratt listens over Barry’s neck as Barry asks if his father’s OK. Pratt says that Paul will be. Then he asks why Barry’s so stridorous. Morris isn’t sure. Pratt asks for some stuff, and based on what he orders, Morris deduces that Pratt thinks Barry has a displaced clavicle. Pratt does, and he thinks it’s compressing the trachea. Morris insists on intubating. Pratt tells Morris to hold on. He small talks to Barry as he preps to do the procedure, and we find out that Barry was helping to build a dream house for his Mom. Unfortunately, alarms go off; Barry’s getting worse. Morris yells at Pratt to push the drugs so he can intubate, but Pratt says that he just needs to get a good grip to do the procedure. Pratt continues to small talk with Barry to distract him. Pratt asks about the kind of house they were building, and Barry says they’re building a Craftsman house. Pratt manages to pop the clavicle back into place, and Barry’s breathing is much better now. Robo-Dubenko rolls in and asks if Barry’s OK. They give him the bullet, and Dubenko gives them some instructions. Then he asks about Paul. Pratt explains that Paul went into arrest, but they managed to get him back. Barry looks at the Robo-Dubenko and asks if it’s a robot doctor. Morris says that they’re very advanced in the ER. Pratt walks into Paul’s trauma room, trailed by Robo-Dubenko.

Lubasha Visnjic: Much later, and we’re in Act 3. Pratt is with Barry. Barry wants to know when his Dad will wake up. Pratt says that they’re hoping he’ll wake up soon. Barry tells Pratt that his Dad cheated on his Mom with a co-worker while he was on a business trip. When Mom found out, she didn’t let Paul live with them for over a month. Dad lived in a hotel during that time. Pratt says that even parents make mistakes sometimes. Barry exposits that his Dad’s trying to make it up to his Mom. Pratt wants to know if that’s the reason why they’re building a house. Barry nods, telling Pratt that his Dad just wants everything to go back to the way it was. Ray enters with Meg, Barry’s Mom. Pratt tells her that Barry has broken bones and a small liver injury. They don’t think he needs surgery. Meg asks about Paul. At this point, Neela knocks on the window to get Ray’s attention. Ray waves at Neela to go away and explains to Meg that Paul had a heart attack and his brain was deprived of oxygen. They’re trying to help Paul to wake up. Neela knocks on the window again, and Ray excuses himself. Pratt asks Meg if she’d like to see Paul. She says no. In the hall, a tightly wound Neela has some lab results to show to Ray. Ray wants to know why she’s in a hurry, and Neela explains that Zoe’s there. A note says that Ray wonders why Neela’s acting weird. Ray’s surprised to hear that Zoe’s there. Neela says that she is and that she’s 14 years old. Ray tells her to shut up. Neela tells him that Zoe was born in 1990. Ray’s all who? Wha? Ray asks if Neela’s for real. She says she is, and “…in prison math, I believe 14 equals 5 to 10”. Ray wants to know where Zoe is, so Neela tells him. Neela calls him “Jerry Lee Lewis” and explains that his “penis pal” has chlamydia. As they walk to Zoe’s room, Ray starts stressing out. Ray says he didn’t know Zoe was that young. She snarks that Zoe’s still teething, but maybe he enjoys that. Ray says that Zoe didn’t say anything. How was he supposed to know? Neela snarks again that they should have conversed a little more before he started banging her and giving out their house key. Ray defends that he doesn’t card his dates. Neela thinks that now’s the time to start. Ray: “1990?!” Neela: “A very good year for chlamydia”. Heh. Cut to Pratt, Meg, and Barry in Barry’s room. Barry’s asleep. Pratt tells Meg that Barry’s perceptive and that he wants his parents to get back together. Meg explains that she doesn’t want to keep Barry from Paul, but she just can’t forgive Paul for what he did. No matter how hard you try, there are some things that you just can’t forget. Cut to Ray and Neela with Zoe. He asks her why she didn’t tell him, and she says that she thought she had a bladder infection due to all the sex they’ve been having. He isn’t talking about that – he wants to know why Zoe didn’t tell him how old she was. Zoe says he never asked. Ray reminds her that she told him she’s a student. She says she is. He guesses she’s in 9th grade; actually, she’s in 8th grade. She was afraid that he wouldn’t like her if he knew how old she was.

Lubasha Visnjic: Much later, and we’re in Act 4. Alarms are blaring, and Abby’s listening to Darwin’s chest as Clemente tries to get access. Alonzo, Darwin’s handler, is nearby. There are no nurses. A note says, “Let me take a moment to ask that this be played utterly straight”. Alonzo says that Darwin started breathing hard again once they got him back to the sanctuary. He thought they said Darwin was OK. Clemente says that he was OK. Clemente tells Abby to bag the chimp, and she does. Alonzo thinks that maybe they should’ve kept Darwin there a little longer. Clemente thought Darwin got better after they gave him fluids; he thought the chimp was dehydrated. Alonzo says he promised Cookie’s owners that Darwin would be OK. Clemente doesn’t know who Cookie is, so Alonzo explains that Cookie is Darwin’s Mom, and she belongs to a nice couple who live in Evanston. Alonzo also takes care of the couple’s llama. Anyway, they determine that Darwin has bacterial infection of the blood. Alonzo reminds them that they gave the chimp antibiotics, and Clemente explains that the antibiotics rupture bacteria, which releases endotoxins, which makes things worse. Abby preps to tube Darwin. Clemente apologizes to Alonzo. Another alarm sounds, and they continue to treat the chimp. Unfortunately, they lose his pulse. Alonzo pleads with them to save Darwin – the nice couple that own Darwin just love him. Clemente looks at Abby and says that they’re on “the cusp” of being irresponsible. Abby states that they went over the cusp a few hours ago. Abby doesn’t stop – she starts doing CPR. Cut to Charlie Pratt’s house. It’s night time. Pratt and Charlie walk quietly together, up to the door. Pratt stops walking before he gets to the door. Charlie asks Pratt if he wants to go in. He doesn’t. Charlie rings the doorbell, and Pratt asks him if he has the keys. Charlie says he tends to lose them at work. The door opens. It’s Chaz. 3 pages later, and we’re back with Darwin. Neela’s there now, too. They’ve been doing CPR on Darwin, and it hasn’t worked. Clemente calls time – it’s been 35 minutes. Alonzo looks at the monitor and notes that Darwin’s heart is still beating. Abby says that it’s just a quiver. Darwin makes a wheezing sound. Alonzo asks if that’s it. Clemente says yes – Darwin’s fading. Alonzo prepares to face the inevitable. Then he says he’s going to get Cookie. Clemente asks Alonzo if he wants to get them all fired. Alonzo gives him a speech and at the end, tells them that Darwin, Cookie’s baby, was taken away from her. She needs to understand why. Neela tries to argue Alonzo’s case. Clemente apologizes, saying that they don’t have time for Alonzo to go back to the sanctuary to get Cookie. Alonzo says he doesn’t have to – Cookie’s outside in his truck with his assistant. Cut to Abby, Neela and Clemente in the hall. Clemente warns them that he’s going to lose it if anyone mentions “next of kin”. Abby says he’s already lost it. Much later, Charlie shows Pratt a bunch of things he sent his mother that she sent back. He has a few notes she wrote him, and…this. It’s a picture of a 4- or 5-year-old Pratt with his Mom. Charlie says that his Mom sending him that picture was an act of mercy. Pratt doesn’t even remember posing for the picture. Charlie says he’s never denied making mistakes. He got arrested for petty crime and did some time. He’s regretted it ever since. Life’s more complicated than Pratt thinks, especially when you’re young. In reference to the letters, Charlie tells Pratt that he’ll see what Charlie means.

Lubasha Visnjic: Cut to Cookie with Darwin. A note says she’s curious but subdued. Neela removes Darwin’s ET tube. Clemente tells Alonzo that it won’t be long now. Abby, who’s clearly upset, moves to draw some morphine into a syringe, saying that she’s going to give some more to Darwin just in case. Clemente and Neela notice that Abby seems affected. Abby says, “What? I want him to be comfortable.” Darwin dies. A note says that Cookie, taking her cue from Neela, gently strokes Abby’s head. Abby thanks Cookie. Then Cookie puts her hand into Abby’s hair and pulls out a speck. Cookie starts to eat it. Cut to Pratt on the train, reading a letter. We hear Charlie? voiceover, “I’m sorry for that”. As he emerges from the EL, we hear a voiceover say, “I should have come more often”.
